The C-130 Hercules was a workhorse in Vietnam as long as it had a
long enough runway. This photo, showing a C-130 in the midst of a "speed
offload", was taken at An Thoi on the island of Dao Phu Quoc in the Gulf of Thailand.
The runway here was M8A1 light-duty steel matting 60' wide and 3600' long and getting on
the small side for a C-130. I guess this crew hadn't heard about the great Navy food and
swimming, because they never even shut down. As soon as the offload was complete, they
taxied right back to the runway and created a small sandstorm taking off. |
