This is the pilot's panel in a Caribou. Although the minimum ground
clearance for safety from small arms fire was 3,000', I routinely flew at either 9,000' or
10,000' to gain additional safety and because the terrain in the Central Highlands reached
altitudes over 8,000'. In this picture, the old-style three hand altimeter shows an
altitude of 9,900'. Judging from the airspeed indicator (top left) at just under 120
knots, we must have had "go home" power set. |
