Caribous in Vietnam

Bullet Holes in a Bou
The driver of this Caribou was very lucky. We normally considered 3,000' AGL (Above Ground Level) to be sufficient protection from small arms fire. This aircraft, however, was acquired and fired upon by a radar-aimed quad 50 caliber while enroute to Tay Ninh, west of Saigon. One engine was rendered inoperative and the aircraft was riddled with holes, but the aircraft commander did a great job of both reporting the position of the gun and landing the aircraft. A strike was called in on the gun emplacement and it was never heard from again. Seems like a high price to pay for supplementing the air conditioning system of a Caribou.
